Epic Games has been consistently adding new features to Fortnite, continuously changing its look and contributing to its ongoing popularity into 2024. It’s expected that the development team will continue to launch innovative improvements for the game.

Over a year ago, Epic’s founder and CEO, Tim Sweeney, hinted at a revolutionary feature coming to Fortnite: player-driven character customization. Despite the initial announcement, this news didn’t generate much buzz at the time. However, there are signs indicating that its implementation may be close.

An Imminent Arrival of Skin Customization in Fortnite?

Currently, Fortnite’s Item Shop is the main place to get cosmetic items, with occasional chances to get free skins for a limited time. Tim Sweeney has mentioned skin customization as a forthcoming addition to this mix. The CEO revealed this in a Twitter post in December 2022.

When asked about skin customization coming to Fortnite Creative, Sweeney indicated that it would be implemented “eventually but not very soon.” With more than a year passing since that update, the launch of this feature with Chapter 5 could be imminent.

While adding skin customization might seem like it could take away from the appeal of the Item Shop, Epic has the potential to make money from this by selling unique customization elements, such as hairstyles and body shapes.

Fortnite has experimented with customizable skins before, the earliest example being the Gear Specialist Maya from the Chapter 2 Season 2 Battle Pass. Allowing users complete freedom in skin customization could benefit both the players and Epic. This feature would revolutionize the game by letting players bring their imagination to life directly, bypassing the limitations of the Item Shop’s offerings, which is why its anticipated introduction is met with excitement.
