Many Bethesda game fans can’t imagine playing without mods, so the question arises – Will Starfield, the highly anticipated space RPG, have mod support at launch? If you’re looking for an answer, you’re in the right place.
Bethesda games have a strong history of modding, with the Skyrim and Fallout franchises having some of the largest modding communities ever. Some mods are so highly recommended by the community that they are considered essential for playing the games.
As Starfield prepares to launch in September, fans are eager to learn everything they can about the game. While many are excited about the promised features, others are concerned about mod support. Bethesda has always been supportive of the modding community, especially with the Creation Kit, an editor for creating mods.
Read on to find out if Starfield supports mods and what engine Bethesda’s latest RPG is built on.
Does Starfield have mod support?
Yes, Starfield will have full mod support at launch as confirmed by Todd Howard himself.
In a Reddit AMA thread in 2021, Todd Howard confirmed that Bethesda’s ambitious space-themed RPG will have full mod support. When asked about mod support, he responded, “Our plan is to have full mod support like our previous games. Our modding community has been with us for 20 years. We love what they do and hope to see more make a career out of it.”
Todd Howard expects Starfield to be played for at least a decade after its release. This is not surprising considering that a large number of players still play Skyrim today. The game continues to receive new mods that make players want to revisit it. It will be up to the modding community to make this a reality, and given their enthusiasm for mods, it should not be difficult.
A game as highly anticipated as Starfield is expected to have dedicated mods within the first few days of its release. It’s easy to imagine mods that add new ships and items with a Star Wars or Starship Troopers theme. However, since it’s a Bethesda title, expect some truly unique and bizarre mods as well.
What engine does Starfield use?
The upcoming Elder Scrolls game, TES VI, and Starfield both use the ‘Creation Engine 2.’ This engine is an improvement over the Creation Engine used for Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76.
Based on the gameplay footage and trailers, the new engine appears to be quite similar to its predecessor. Only time will tell if it includes much-needed improvements or if modding will be easier with it.
Starfield will feature over 1000 planets to explore.
It should be noted that the majority of these mods will only be available on PC. However, as they have done in the past, Bethesda may decide to port some mods to consoles as downloadable content.
